COVID-19's Impact on the Entertainment Industry

These last few weeks have been a whirlwind, and the COVID-19 pandemic escalated much quicker than I ever imagined. Unless you've been living under a rock, you're probably aware of the substantial impact this virus has had worldwide. Countries are closing their borders. Schools, theme parks, sporting events, concerts, major movie and television productions, film festivals, and the Houston Live Stock Show and Rodeo were shut down, canceled, or postponed indefinitely as a result. All of my extra-curricular activities are canceled until further notice. Everyone's life has suddenly been put on hold as "social distancing" has now become our primary social responsibility.
In light of this, I've felt discouraged from writing reviews. Not that theaters will remain open much longer, but how could I possibly encourage someone to visit one and put the health and safety of themselves or others at risk? Therefore, I'd like to specifically discuss COVID-19's impact on the entertainment industry and how Film Assessment will be affected. Hollywood has suffered a critical blow. This weekend's domestic box office receipts of $55.3 Million were the worst in 22 years. With no significant releases currently slated till May 1, this predicament is unlikely to change anytime soon.
Due to health concerns, New York and Los Angeles theaters were ordered to close by their cities' respective mayors. Today, Regal Cinemas also made the decision to close all 543 of its locations. Other chains will likely follow suit, but for now, they are implementing social distancing policies by limiting attendance. Studios are also beginning to take advantage of the dilemma by offloading high profile, recent releases early onto video-on-demand and streaming services. Disney already added Frozen II to Disney+ three months early and made Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker available digitally a few days early as well. Meanwhile, NBCUniversal announced that they would be offering The Invisible Man, The Hunt, and Emma as on-demand rentals for $19.99 this Friday with Trolls World Tour available on April 10, its scheduled theatrical release date. I'm very curious to see how other studios respond.
While this early access is undoubtedly convenient, I'm afraid it could accelerate the death of movie theaters. Theaters nationwide will be forced to temporarily close their doors soon, whether they're ordered to or not. Who knows if it will be due to the lack of new releases or health-conscious moviegoers. Whatever the case, cinema attendance is on a downward trajectory regardless. Unless it has superheroes, is part of an existing franchise, marketed as an event, or involves A-list talent, movies hardly make a dent in the box office these days. There are bonafide exceptions, of course, but I'm speaking in general terms. Streaming services are more affordable, accessible, and convenient. Studios now have the means to capitalize on that. With their own streaming services, they can cut out the middle man altogether.
Now, I'm doubtful that we'll see the likes of A Quiet Place: Part IIMulan, Black WidowWonder Woman 1984, or Tenet will be dumped online with complete disregard. But the low-to-mid-budgeted productions or those destined to flop will likely be given this treatment. Once audiences grow accustomed to this, they'll be hard-pressed to leave their couch. Only time can tell what will happen, but I hope this pandemic doesn't signal the end of the multiplex. They offer a unique communal experience and an escape from our bleak reality. At a time when we need movies more than ever, the hands of theater chains and studio executives are tied. Here's hoping a sense of normalcy is soon restored.
As for my Film Assessment plans, I'll catch up on sharing the reviews I currently have drafted. This includes Onward and Reel Recaps for February and, eventually, March. I don't know what I'll call it yet, but I'd like to begin making weekly streaming recommendations while everyone's cooped up at home with nothing to do. These recommendations will be shared in place of new reviews because it will be a while before I see anything new. Just remember to practice social distancing and wash your hands for goodness sake! Let's flatten the curve!

Fall 2017 Important Update

Dear readers,

Some of you may have noticed that I haven't posted a review in about a week or two. Well, that's largely due to the rush of going back to school in combination with many things I had going on the last two weeks. I hope to get back on track with my all my late Throwback Thursday Reviews soon (I'm not sure exactly when that will be, but I'll be working on them till the power goes out, and with it my wifi). However, there will be some unfortunate changes in the next four months.

I haven't been incredibly open about this, but some of you may know I've just begun an internship with Allied Integrated Marketing. They're essentially tasked with promoting films in the Houston area, and I was informed I wouldn't be able to review any of those films. I was fine with that, considering I wasn't intent on seeing many of these films anyways.

However, I was recently informed that reviewing any current releases would be a conflict of interest and I'd rather stay away from that murky territory. Of course this news bummed me out, because that meant I wouldn't be able to share reviews for any upcoming blockbusters like It (2017)Kingsman: The Golden CircleBlade Runner 2049Thor: RagnarokJustice League, and Coco.

I'll still be seeing these movies of course, and you're more-than welcome to ask me how I felt about any of them in-person or via any private messaging. I have no qualms sharing my opinion privately.

I will eventually review a lot of these newer releases, but they won't be published till after my internship is over. What I'd like to hear back from you is whether you'd prefer me to spread these reviews out and share them when they drop on home media or dump them all on the internet all-at-once come December?

I'm aware that a majority of my readership tends to come to my blog to read up on what's currently playing or is soon to be released in theaters, but I'd like to finish out this internship because I feel that the experience and knowledge may be beneficial later on if I do wind up marketing films for some big studio. Obviously, this means the content of my blog will change significantly till mid-December.

Essentially, I'll be only reviewing older releases. My Throwback Thursday Reviews will certainly keep chugging ahead and I'll work on uploading my late reviews of InceptionInterstellar, Stand By Me, and The World's End as soon as possible. Over the next four months, I'll be working to introduce unique content to fill the holes of these reviews that I feel might interest my readership. Not all the news is bad news though...

On the bright side, my internship ends the same week my most anticipated film of the year releases. So the force is with me and a timely Star Wars: The Last Jedi review shall swoop in from a galaxy far, far away come December 15th.

In the meantime, may the force be with you!

Update

I recently made the decision to branch my television reviews out to a separate blog called Television Assessment and relocated all television reviews there. I also decided that for the time being I will not review television. If I decide to pick up reviews for these television series again I will review them as a while season rather than individual episodes. However, I'm leaving all my reviews on this blog up and don't have any plans to delete them because a great deal of time went into creating them. If you'd like to see any they are at this link, http://televisionassessment.blogspot.com.

FilmAssessment Update Post

With the summer coming to a close and tv shows about to begin in full force I felt I should have an update to inform my readers what I plan to review in the coming months.

Throwback Thursday Reviews

I'm glad to announce I will be continuing the Throwback Thursday series of reviews and have carefully planned out what I will be reviewing each Thursday for the rest of the year.
Netflix series of reviews- last week I noticed that it was the first week that a major blockbuster wasn't released since I began the Throwback Thursday reviews and I managed to find spare time to go through Netflix and select some older films I hadn't seen before that I was interested in watching and would like to share my thoughts on so for the next few weeks I will review some films currently on Netflix that I haven't seen in their entirety. These reviews technically began last Thursday and will end September 17, 2015.
Predecessor's to an upcoming sequel- On September 25th Hotel Transylvania 2 is coming to theaters so I figured I should review the first one. The Hunger Games series, the newer Bond flicks, a new Rocky film, and a new Pixar film are also included in this category
Star Wars Reviews- Some of my readers may not know that I am a huge Star Wars fan and since Star Wars: The Force Awakens comes out on December 17th I decided I should attempt to review the entire Star Wars Saga. You may notice that there is a break in between the prequels and the original trilogy and that is because in-between October and December there are a few big franchise releases.
9/3- Top Gun
9/10- Pulp Fiction
9/17- The Hurt Locker
9/24- Hotel Transylvania
10/1- Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
10/8- Star Wars Episode II: Attack Of The Clones
10/15- Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith
10/22- Casino Royale
10/29- Quantum Of Solace
11/5- Skyfall
11/12- The Hunger Games
11/19- The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
11/26- Rocky and/or an unselcted Pixar film
12/3- Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
12/10- Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
12/17- Star Wars Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi
12/24- No Throwback Thursday reviews are scheduled as of now due to Christmas Eve
12/31- No Throwback Thursday reviews since I will instead upload lists of the films I missed out on that I wish I had seen, the top 5 underwhelming films, my top 10 films of the year, and the top 10 films I am anticipating for 2016 similar to the lists I created last year.

Television Reviews

I will continue reviewing Television shows as I have previously with highlights from the episode and a brief non spoiler review. I anticipate reviewing Once Upon A Time, Arrow, The Flash, Gotham, Daredevil, Agent Carter, and Agents of SHIELD once again. I will be adding Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow to the shows I will review. So reviews will start in a few weeks when Fall TV gets up and running.

Movie Reviews

I compiled a list of every film release for the rest of the year I anticipate watching and reviewing but I might miss one or two this is just a rough estimate on what I plan to review.
- Straight Outta Compton
- Before We Go
- Blackmass
- Everest
- Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials
- Hotel Transylvania 2
- The Intern
- The Martian
- Goosebumps
- The Last Witch Hunter
- Spectre
- The Peanuts Movie

- Creed
- The Good Dinosaur
- Victor Frankenstein
- In The Heart Of The Sea
- Star Wars: The Force Awakens

One Year Anniversary Post

Exactly one year ago today I created this blog and posted my first movie review, 'The The LEGO Movie Movie' Review, which you can view at this link. Since February 10, 2014, my blog has accumulated 2,925 pageviews, I have posted 140 posts and received 406 pageviews in the past month. I would just like to express my appreciation for all of you who read my blog and support it. I am very thankful of my readers.

- A list comparing my predictions of the Academy Award winners and the actual winners

Ideas for my blog

Given the success of this blog, I am currently considering either separating TV reviews and publishing them on a separate new blog called TVAssessment, only publishing the TV reviews as individual posts, or publishing the TV Reviews only on a page, which are the tabs you can select on the side of the site. I appreciate it if I received comments with a suggestion for this idea or expressing your thoughts of what you would like to see done. I am also considering no longer publishing TV reviews after the current season is finished since I will be going into college next semester and the TV reviews require more work and need to be posted more frequently. Please let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Overview

I am very thankful for all for you who read my blog and it's posts and hope you continue to read my reviews. If you would like to see links to my reviews as well as keep up with movie news like my Facebook page, FilmAssessment or follow my blog's Twitter account @FilmAssessment, I currently am not as active on my blog's Twitter account because it only has 3 followers but if it receives more I will be more active on it.
